<image:title>MARCH 2025 NEWSLETTER - Exciting Matching Grant Opportunity: Fuel the Future of Psychedelic Mental Health Access</image:title>
<image:caption>We have a game-changing chance to amplify the impact of your support. A long-time philanthropist in the health equity space sees the promise of PAT for marginalized communities and wants to see bridges built between our communities. They have put up a $200,000 matching grant to help us raise an additional $400,000 in the next two months. This will ensure we produce substantive outcomes this year with: The New Mexico pilot focused on psilocybin for PTSD, Depression with co-occurring SUD in veteran and native communities The common data variables to standardize collection of real-world application of PAT across a wide range medicines, therapies, and populations The development and launch of additional pilots in New Jersey and WIsconsin. Every contribution made by April 30, 2025, moves us closer to integrating PAT into the larger health equity frameworks. Our $600,000 goal will directly support our work in expanding access to psychedelic-assisted therapy. This means more research, better care models, and real solutions for those who need them. We’re calling on our supporters, new allies, and anyone who believes in the future of psychedelic mental health care to help us hit this target. It is a potential win beyond the work of PMHA and will have rippled effects through the mental health ecosystem. <image:title>MARCH 2025 NEWSLETTER - PMHA’s Medicaid Strategist, Tanya Shah, Leads Partnership with the Center for Health Care Strategies - Meet Tanya Shah: PMHA’s Medicaid Strategist & Liaison to CHCS</image:title>
<image:caption>Tanya is a public health leader who has dedicated her career to scaling evidence-based solutions our most socially and medically complex populations. She is an MBA and MPH with 25+ years of experience ensuring access to high quality and equitable health services to disadvantaged populations. As an immigrant who moved here as an adolescent under asylum, Tanya has lived experience that she brings to her passion to help communities of color and people who face socio-economic disadvantages. Her focus on improving policies and programs through Medicaid and Medicare to achieve better quality and more equitable care have manifested in innovative new programs for millions. As Assistant Commissioner for the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene in New York City, Tanya leveraged limited resources to expand primary care for 4 million New Yorkers on Medicaid and improve community mental health for the justice involved population. She then joined The Commonwealth Fund to develop a change model in our healthcare system to address the social determinants of health for people with complex needs. This has resulted in several new programs and policies that integrate medical, behavioral and social care across systems serving marginalized populations. PMHA is thrilled to introduce Tanya Shah, a public health leader with over 25 years of experience in Medicaid and Medicare policy reform. As PMHA’s Medicaid strategist and liaison to CHCS, Shah is at the forefront of efforts to ensure that psychedelic-assisted therapy becomes a viable treatment option within Medicaid. We sat down with her to discuss the significance of this work, how CHCS is shaping the Medicaid roadmap for PAT, and why this mission is personal to her.</image:caption>

<image:title>MARCH 2025 NEWSLETTER - Putting a PEP in Our Step: A New Partnership with the 1440 Foundation & U-PEP</image:title>
<image:caption>A profound shift is taking place in psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT)—one that acknowledges the deep need for health equity, cultural competence, and access for those historically left out of transformative care. In a new and meaningful partnership, the PMHA Alliance, 1440 Foundation, and the University Psychedelic Education Program (U-PEP) are coming together to develop a shared curriculum that will illuminate the essential principles of equitable access and best practices in PAT for marginalized communities. U-PEP is an initiative designed to equip university faculty—particularly in nursing, social work, and other healthcare disciplines—with the tools to integrate evidence-based psychedelic education into their curricula. Offered at no cost to institutions, the program provides in-depth knowledge, mentorship, and resources to prepare the next generation of professionals to support safe, equitable, and culturally attuned psychedelic care. Learn more about U-PEP here. At the heart of this effort is a recognition that therapy, healing, and well-being cannot be one-size-fits-all. The voices of those most impacted—communities that have long carried both wisdom and wounds—must be woven into the fabric of how care is delivered. To that end, PMHA Alliance is leading the development of the first training module, the first of many educational tools designed to support U-PEP partner organizations, the broader PAT training ecosystem, and medical professionals seeking to integrate inclusive, responsive, and safe PAT practices into their work. Education is an invitation—to listen, to expand, and to transform. As this partnership takes shape, the first module is set to launch in June 2025, marking a step toward a future where psychedelic therapies are not just accessible, but truly attuned to the diverse realities of those seeking healing. Stay tuned—this is just the beginning!</image:caption>

<image:title>JUNE 2025 NEWSLETTER - Listening First: How PMHA’s New Mexico Group Psilocybin Study is Being Shaped by Community Design - Reflections from the Field</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the on-the-ground leaders of this work is Janus Herrera, Health Promotion Specialist at the Health Equity Council. After several months of zoom planning I finally had the pleasure of meeting Janus in person during my most recent visit to New Mexico, and she offered this reflection on what the community engagement process has meant to her: “The most interesting part of collaborating on the Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy pilot program for me has been learning from the many contributors from very different walks of life who have found healing in this powerful plant medicine. It has been challenging and important to name and discuss the cultural appropriation and commodification of plant medicine. My personal hope for this work is that there will be a cultural shift around psilocybin and psychedelics to allow people to access the therapeutic treatments that are effective for them—I like to say that every BODY is different—while honoring the cultural precedents for this type of deep and meaningful work.”</image:caption>

<image:title>JUNE 2025 NEWSLETTER - Listening First: How PMHA’s New Mexico Group Psilocybin Study is Being Shaped by Community Design - Shaping the Study Through Set and Setting</image:title>
<image:caption>During my last visit to New Mexico, I also had the opportunity to spend time with Dr. Larry Leeman and Dr. Maya Armstrong who are leading the research team at the University of New Mexico. We convened at the Interdisciplinary Substance Use and Brain Injury (ISUBI) Research Center - where the designated rooms for the upcoming pilot study are located. We engaged in thoughtful discussions about how to transform the space into a setting that fosters calm, dignity, and cultural resonance for participants. Our conversation encompassed elements such as lighting, acoustics, artwork, and spatial arrangement—recognizing that these design choices are not peripheral but central to the therapeutic experience This focus on setting is part of a broader commitment. PMHA has recently joined the Set and Setting Consortium, a collaborative network of researchers and practitioners exploring the multidimensional impact of therapeutic environments in psychedelic care. I had the pleasure of joining their most recent session at the 1440 Foundation, where we explored frameworks emerging from McGill University’s research on setting domains—from sensory environment and relational field to cultural symbolism and spatial agency. These domains significantly influence participant outcomes and should be integrated into study design with intention. Our collaboration in New Mexico reflects this commitment: to ground psychedelic care not just in protocol, but in place..</image:caption>

<image:title>JUNE 2025 NEWSLETTER - Establishing a Standardized Dataset for Psychedelic Medicine - A Delphi Expert-Consensus study</image:title>
<image:caption>The Psychedelic Mental Health Access Alliance (PMHA), UC Berkeley’s Collaborative on the Economics of Psychedelics (CEP), and McGill University are launching a Delphi Expert-Consensus Study to develop a standardized set of measures and variables for psychedelic-assisted therapy across diverse clinical and research settings. This initiative responds to a critical need: current approaches to data collection vary widely between research studies and are inconsistently applied in clinical settings. By creating a set of standardized measures and variables, this project aims to: Improve the comparability of scientific studies Enable “real-world” effectiveness research Guide best practices in clinical and community-based settings Support policy and insurance decision-making Why this matters: Supports effectiveness research necessary for public and private insurance coverage Improves data comparability across clinics, studies, and patient populations Guides evidence-informed practice in a rapidly evolving therapeutic field Lays the groundwork for safety monitoring, reimbursement models, and scalable care systems A Delphi survey is a structured, multi-round research process that uses anonymous feedback to build expert consensus. This process will: Involve at least three iterative rounds of structured input and feedback Engage diverse stakeholders, including: Clinicians Researchers Health economists Medicaid and health policy experts Produce a consensus-based framework to guide effective and practical implementation of psychedelic-assisted therapy data collection tailored to specific contexts We are recruiting a multidisciplinary panel of experts to ensure balanced representation, including: Clinicians – frontline experience with psychedelic therapy delivery Researchers – expertise in mental health, public health, and health economics Policy/Health Systems Experts – focus on safety, regulation, and cost-effectiveness Medicaid Experts – specialization in coverage and integration into public insurance programs Get involved: If you’re a clinician, researcher, policymaker, or Medicaid expert with relevant experience, we invite you to complete the form linked here to express your interest in this groundbreaking project to shape the future of psychedelic medicine. Note: Completing the form does not represent a formal commitment to participate. Additional details about the methodology and next steps will be shared with invited participants in the coming months. If you have any questions about the form or would like to connect further about this work, feel free to reach out to Sara de la Salle at sara.delasalle@mail.mcgill.ca or Dara Menashi at dara@pmhaa.org.</image:caption>

<image:title>JUNE 2025 NEWSLETTER - PMHA Alliance Joins Set & Setting Collaborative - PMHA Alliance had the pleasure of joining the Set & Setting Collaborative at 1440 Multiversity this spring. Launched by the International Arts + Mind Lab, the Collaborative is a multidisciplinary initiative exploring how “set and setting”—the psychological, social, and environmental conditions surrounding an experience—shape transformational outcomes across health, education, the arts, and society at large. The March 22 gathering convened researchers, clinicians, artists, cultural leaders, and educators to co-create a shared vision for applying these principles not only in psychedelic-assisted therapy, but across systems of care and learning. A central aim is to define and elevate best practices that center ethics, cultural intelligence, and human well-being. PMHA Alliance is honored to contribute to this field-building effort by sharing data and insights focused on culturally attuned and resonant environments for psychedelic-assisted therapy. At the same time, we’re learning from the Collaborative—drawing on its collective wisdom to inform the design of our pilots and care models. To get involved or stay connected with the Collaborative, you can join their mailing list or share relevant opportunities by contacting Anne Palmer at anne.palmer@artsandmindlab.org.</image:title>

<image:title>JUNE 2025 NEWSLETTER - Advancing Standardized Care Metrics Across the Field - Four Questions for Dr. Kyle Greenway</image:title>
<image:caption>Kyle Greenway, MD MSc FRCPC, is an Assistant Professor in Psychiatry at McGill University, attending psychiatrist at the Jewish General Hospital, and investigator at the Lady Davis Institute. He conducts clinical, naturalistic, and fundamental research on novel psychiatric interventions, particularly psychedelic-assisted psychotherapies for refractory depressive disorders. He leads the Ketamine-Assisted Therapy service at the Jewish General Hospital, one of only a handful of clinics in the world to offer a psychedelic therapy for severe depression in a public payer system. His work explores the impacts of extra-pharmacological factors on psychedelic and conventional psychiatric treatments, including how treatment protocols can be tailored to individuals based on their unique life experiences and cultures. He co-led the Delphi Process conducted for a study on Set and Setting, exploring the most important non-pharmacological factors that impact psychedelic experiences in clinical trials. He will be directing our Delphi Process to establish a core set of variables intended to capture key elements of care delivery that will have the highest likelihood of adoption across the field.</image:caption>

They were joined on stage by Dr. Larry Leeman (University of New Mexico), Crystal C. Romero (Veteran & Peer Navigator), and Jamus Herrera (Bernalillo County Health Equity Council) for a powerful conversation about how the Group Psilocybin-Assisted Therapy (GPAT) Study for PTSD is taking shape in New Mexico—how it’s being guided by a nine-month community engagement process, and how it will ultimately inform the state's newly approved, legislatively backed medical psychedelic therapy program. This includes advising the department as it establishes the newly formed Advisory Board and helping ensure that the emerging system is accessible, inclusive, and meets the needs of people across income levels. It has been a profound honor to work with HAF’s newest team member, Denali Wilson, who serves as the New Mexico Director of Strategic Support. Denali brings passion, legal acumen, and deep commitment to justice to this moment of system creation in New Mexico.</image:caption>
